A major forestry operation experienced significant damage to a critical access road culvert due to a washout, requiring emergency replacement and track restoration. The existing log culvert structure had failed, creating a hazardous crossing point that prevented safe vehicle access to forest management areas. The damage had compromised both operational efficiency and environmental stability of the creek system, necessitating a comprehensive solution that would restore access while ensuring regulatory compliance.
Project Scope and Challenges
The project required complete replacement of the damaged culvert system while maintaining environmental compliance and minimising disruption to the natural watercourse. Key challenges included:
- Working within an active creek environment
- Managing sediment control during construction
- Ensuring long-term durability in a high-flow water crossing
- Maintaining access for ongoing forest operations

Our Solution
Our approach began with careful site preparation and access development. All machinery and materials were transported to the remote forest site, where a new access track was cut to reach the damaged washout area. The existing failed log structures and debris were removed, and the creek bed was properly prepared to receive the new culvert installation.
Environmental controls formed a critical component of the construction process. Working closely with Taranaki Regional Council, we developed comprehensive sediment control and environmental plans specifically for working within the creek environment. Council inspections were conducted throughout the project to ensure regulatory compliance. An industrial water pump was deployed to temporarily divert creek flow during the work period, while hay bale sediment barriers were strategically installed at both creek entry and exit points. These measures ensured compliance with environmental regulations and minimised impact on the natural watercourse throughout construction.
The culvert installation process involved placement of 2.3-meter diameter plastic Infra-pipe culvert systems, with careful attention to proper alignment and grade for optimal water flow. Backfilling was completed using AP65 aggregate material, applied and compacted in controlled 150mm layers to meet engineering specifications.
Structural reinforcement was achieved through the strategic positioning of boulder headwall protection at the culvert entrance, followed by construction of a formed concrete headwall between the boulders. The in-situ concrete pour was engineered specifically for long-term fill retention, creating a robust interface between the natural creek bank and the new culvert structure. Track restoration was completed with the application of a final AP40 aggregate surface layer, ensuring full vehicle access across the crossing with proper drainage and surface water management.
